Twinning & Friendships

Cirencester has a long tradition of twinning and friendship with the towns of Itzehoe, near Hamburg, Germany, St-Genis-Laval, a suburb of Lyon, France and the City of Bathurst in Australia.

Twinning

Under the leadership of a small committee the Cirencester Twinning Association is aims to build strong links with our twinning towns, Itzehoe and St Genis Laval.  This includes cultural visits abroad with reciprocal hostings and opportunities to share experiences amongst local people with an international interest. There are also possibilities such as hosting work experience placements, developing links between clubs and societies and language learning. The Cirencester Twinning Association works in co-operation with Cirencester Town Council.

Anyone who likes travelling and making friends can get involved!  Please contact the Twinning Association if you would enjoy visiting France or Germany. E: cirencestertwinning@gmail.com.

Friendships

A Memorandum of Understanding between Cirencester Town Council and Bathurst Regional Council was officially signed in January 2021. It was signed by the Mayor of Cirencester, Councillor Patrick Coleman. The document supports the Friendship Agreement between Cirencester and the City of Bathurst, Australia with its vision to promote awareness, communication and opportunities between the people and organisations of our two regional capitals; based on friendship, commerce, education, the arts, sports and tourism.

A friendship arrangement between Cirencester and Bathurst in Australia was officially launched on the 18 October, 2017. The City of Bathurst was named after the 3rd Earl Bathurst in 1815 whose family has lived in Cirencester since 1695. Following a visit to Cirencester in 2016 by a City of Bathurst regional councillor, the then Mayor of Bathurst approached Cirencester Town Council with a proposal to develop a friendship between the two areas. We look forward to continuing to develop the links between our two communities.
