Council Update - Maintenance of the Town Centre
We know, through public consultation, that many value the changes made in and around the Market Place including the thriving markets and events which now take place in the heart of the town centre. We also know that the town centre is in need of some attention and have appointed a project consultant to lead on arranging remedial repairs alongside road safety audit works required by the County Council (GCC). The tarmac is only a temporary safety fix. Future maintenance will be on a like for like basis.
Once the remedial and road safety works are complete the County Council will issue the practical completion certificate for the scheme. The Town Council will then continue to be responsible for maintenance and a final independent road safety audit will be carried out before the County Council issues the Final Certificate and the road way reverts back to GCC for future maintenance.
The pedestrian area in front of the Parish Church has been stopped-up and is no longer designated as county highway and will remain the responsibility of the Town Council to maintain. We are aiming for a Final Certificate date of December 2022.
